Strong enough not to show goodbyes

won’t make the tears for my eyes

just a nod and a smile and a “see you around”

no problem, hold fast, ignore the ground

falling out from beneath where we used to stand

crumbling rock and cascading fine sand

hold fast, be a tree, though my roots are set free,

reaching out, no purchase, don’t shout ‘help me

unbowed, unbroken, floating on the air,

confused and astounded that you won’t be there…

but just nod.

just smile.

say ‘see you around’

a tree pretending to grow without ground.
